How to use Daily Prayer

Our Community Daily Prayer has been created to unite our hearts in a common “way” in seeking a personal touch from our heavenly Father and Savior. It by no means should ever replace our individual and personal prayer dialogue with the Trinity.

Our Daily Prayer is simply a helping hand to those who desire to journey more intimately together in Community Prayer. Therefore seek to be prompted by the Holy Spirit during your time in Daily Prayer, and stop when He shines His light on something you may have just prayed.

Our prayers are Morning, Midday and Evening. Compline is the final thought for the day, therefore best done just before you put the lights out, or with the children as you’re putting them to bed.

Daily Prayer can be followed individually (Personal Prayer), or in a group and Community setting (Group Prayer), with friends, family and the occasional visiting stranger!

During Morning prayer there are references to: Scripture Readings, Daily Personal Bible Reading / Study and Meditation for the day.

For this period of prayer we suggest you derive inspiration from any Daily Devotional resource material you feel lead to wander in.

Many of our Community Members use the Celtic Daily Prayer (ISBN 0-00-719907-4) by the Northumbria Community (www.northumbriacommunity.org).

Others use: (to name only a few links)

Everyday with Jesus (Selwyn Hughes).

Book of Common Prayer (www.anglicansonline.com)

From Faith to Faith (www.kcm.org)

Thomas Merton (www.merton.org)

Henri Nouwen Society (www.Henrinouwen.org)

This section of the Daily Prayer is designed to give you the time and freedom to wander into the readings that God leads you. It is here that you will meet the words of transformation; our Daily Prayer is merely the preparation of the heart to receive the bread of life, the Word of God.

During Daily Personal Bible Reading / Study, we suggest you venture into Lectio Divina, also known as Sacred Reading. For a helping hand in this, link into www.cellofpeace.com/cp_method.htm

Lectio Divina is the most traditional way of cultivating friendship with Christ. It is a way of listening to the texts of scripture as if we were in conversation with Christ and he were suggesting the topics of conversation. The daily encounter with Christ and reflection on his word leads beyond mere acquaintanceship to an attitude of friendship, trust and love.

Thomas Keating

Prayers for others, is a gentle nudge for us to contemplate and intercede for the needs of others.

 Key:

+ signifies marking ourselves with the sign of Christ’s cross.

Bold Print signifies joint prayer “unison” (say together).

“Call” is said by the leader of the prayer session.

Change reader.

Boxed text must repeated by each person in the group.

Selah signifies “pause and reflect”.

Finally, you will see that the Prayers have a slightly larger font, this was done deliberately; it is to aid those who prayer by candlelight.

 Thanks:

Our Community Daily Prayer has been deeply inspired and adapted from the “Daily Office” of the Northumbria Community, found at Nether Springs, North East England, our Friends!

To all who are seeking together…

We pray you’ll find your way home! …Selah.
